Reliquary XX–XXI

Version 1: Obituaries

2009

Sergey Shabohin, Reliquary XX–XXI (Version 1: Obituaries), from the cycle Every Day I Talk to the Dead & Alive Artists, plastic, metal, glass, digital printing, canvas, objects, 2 showcases 100 × 100 × 100 cm each, 2009

ID: W3.1

The first version of the reliquaries from 2009 consisted of two tables, on which fragments of works by artists who passed away before 2009 were placed without any specific thematic connection. This work was part of the cycle Every Day I Talk to the Dead & Alive Artists and was a part of a larger installation exploring the death of the author and critiquing the collapsed system of Belarusian art. The project consists of two reliquary showcases, each divided into one hundred cells. Each cell corresponds to a specific year: the first showcase covers the 20th century, from 1901 to 2000, while the second represents the 21st century, from 2001 to 2100. In each cell, the author placed fragments of works created by artists who passed away in that particular year.

For example, Marcel Duchamp, who died in 1968, was represented by a fragment of a porcelain urinal. Yves Klein (1962) was represented by a piece of a blue monochrome canvas, while Joseph Beuys (1986) was symbolized by a severed rabbit’s foot, a fragment of a felt hat, and wax, among others. The first showcase is entirely filled, while the second is only partially complete, as all cells were occupied up until 2009, after which they remained empty.

The work demonstrates that nothing remains: artists pass away, their works are "cut into fragments" by art enthusiasts, and ahead lies emptiness – both frightening and inspiring. These tables allude to archaeological archives as well as Christian reliquaries containing the relics of saints (hence the name Reliquary).  The showcases were part of the collection of  Ў Gallery in Minsk, but they were destroyed in 2016 due to a flood in the gallery's storage.
